Single Piece Slate -- We make your vinyl dreams come true

Frequently Asked Questions

keenan and john

Who are you guys?
We are John and Keenan, a couple that really loves vinyl. John handles all of the technical stuff and Keenan handles all the businessy stuff.

Where are you located?
We work out of our North Seattle home with our 3 kitties. If you're ever in the Seattle area and would like to come by and see our set up and geek out about vinyl, drop us a line! We'll be moving the business to Athens, GA in the fall, so look out for some Midwest, Southern, and East Coast lathe tours in 2011!

How does it sound?
Very good! Vinyl always has the potential to sound better than a CD, but it doesn't always. We work very hard to maintain a warm vinyl sound in stereo without clicks and pops and hiss, but because it is a duplicate, it's never going to sound as perfect as the original.

Are they permanent records? Will they wear out after play?
Yes, they are permanent! Our records are made of high quality polycarbonate and are cut with a diamond stylus to make very permanent records that will not wear out after repeated play. We do not have any materials that will deteriorate over time.

What exactly is lathe cut?
Lathe cutting is a process of actually manually cutting the grooves into a blank record, instead of pressing a plated master into mold-able plastic like at a pressing plant.

What does it cost?
Our 7"s range from $2-$5 each with a $25-$50 set up fee. We have no minimum order, but we cannot handle orders of more than 100.

We currently have available:

.5mm clear floppies (like a thick flexi) for $3/each or $2/each one sided

1.5mm clear for $4/each

1.5mm black for $5/each

plus a $25 set up fee for all orders 50 or under. Please e-mail us for a quote for runs over 50.

Can you cut on both sides? Even on the floppies?
Yep! We recommend at staying around 5 minutes/side, but even the floppies sound great cut on both sides!

Why is this more expensive than a pressing plant?
Since each record is handmade, it's much more labor intensive than a pressing plant. We're not a great option for the person who is looking to make several hundred records, but if you're looking for a very limited special run, we'd love to help you make your vinyl dreams come true!

Do you make LPs?
Sadly, we do not. It's too much wear on our machine to ever keep them within a reasonable budget. We do make 12" EPs at 10 minutes/side on 1.5mm black vinyl for $7/each with a $50 set up fee.

Can you make me a copy of my favorite album that was never released on vinyl/make my girlfriend/boyfriend a vinyl mix?
Nope! We can't cut anything that you don't legally own the rights to. However, if you have a one off/small project that you do own the rights to, we'd be happy to help!

Do you send samples?
We don't have samples pre-made. If you're interested in hearing the quality of the lathe, we ask that you send us files of what you'd like cut and $5 to cover the cost of the materials, the time it takes to cut it and shipping. We're a very small company and can't quite afford to send out free samples at this point. We also feel that if someone wants a sample, they'd like to hear their own materials cut to best understand how it's going to sound.

How can we send you music? How can we pay you?
We can take a CD mailed to us (check the contact form for address) or WAV files e-mailed to us. If you e-mail us files, please keep the tracks clearly marked with your name (or your band name - whatever you've been contacting us with) and Side A/Side B. Please make sure to send them from a link that won't expire. We take checks or paypal (singlepieceslate@gmail.com), and we require an upfront payment to get a slot in the cue.
